Llangollen Canal Boats Horse Drawn and Aqueduct

Llangollen Canal Boats Horse Drawn and Aqueduct

Today, we wanted to go on a canal boat ride.

As we drove into Llangollen the rain and the showers started.

Next thing we knew, we were walking toward the river and a deluge came upon us.

On we went, jumping over puddles, and huddling under bus shelters.

We had no idea of what time the boats departed but we knew it was today.

As we arrive, the rains lighten – wouldn’t you know it!

So we go in and buy the tickets.

We decide to go ‘back to back’.  First the horse-drawn canal boat, and then the aqueduct canal boat.

We only had about 20 minutes wait so that was great!

The staff harnessed up the horse and we jumped in. These boats were set up to take cargo but now are used for tourists.

Explorason wants the front of the boat, and it is fun to see the ducklings madly paddling to get out of the way as the boat glides by.

There is a man at the rear steering, and one with the horse leading.
We pass gorgeous homes and plants.

We head back and only just make it to the station.

We jump on the next canal boat.

I dive into the little bathroom, and next, we order a cappuccino, hot chocolate, and scones with jam and clotted cream – very traditional!

I had been waiting for warm fruity scones – yum 🙂

It warmed us up nicely.

To our surprise, there on the canal boat are 2 couples from the hotel. One Welsh couple has their Grandson from New Zealand. The other couple is English, and turn out to be my friends back in Adelaide’s Uncle and Auntie.  We all get on amazingly well and have a great time.

Several boats are parked and waiting, or berthed – this is an area known as Trevor.

We arrive at the aqueduct and have to wait for another canal boat to pass through.

Finally, it is our turn to head over the aqueduct.  It is quite exciting.

The drop off on one side is massive, and there is a walkway on the other side.

We finish off and head back to town on a bus.

When we hit town, we wish we were staying another night.

It has been a great day bit tomorrow is our last day with the hire car, and we have to get it to Liverpool.

We all hug goodbye in town.

It has been a fantastic time.

North Wales is really wonderful – I recommend anyone to visit who is heading this way.

  1. Looking like you had a fantastic day despite the weather, which unfortunately is usual for the UK. We hired a boat out for the weekend with friends the other year and headed off down the Norfolk Broads which I would highly recommend to anyone we had a great time! 🙂
