Fun Things To Do In Las Vegas
We are getting into the groove of Las Vegas (see post above) because there are lots of fun things to do in Las Vegas if you have kids. Yes, I and my seven-year-old are having fun! We tend to have early starts and early nights but this might change according to the age of your children.
But that is also as I don’t want my son exposed to a lot of the events in the street at night. This includes drunks, and drug addicts – some of which break my heart. I think “that is someone’s son”. One guy had me in tears – I was really sad, so you might want to screen your child from seeing that, or you might want to show them the dangers of drugs and alcohol also.
Toiletries galore
We have a cleaner who seems to think we need toiletries. I mean 10 cakes of soap, and multitudes of hand cream, but I try only to keep what we need. So, we usually try to give some out to poor people as random acts of kindness, so I stuck some in my handbag in case we meet any beggars or homeless as we walk along. This is actually received very well. Many just want to be spoken to and feel cared about.
I have been approached to do a timeshare visit and in exchange there are freebies. This includes a dinner, a show, Madam Tussaud’s, gondola rides etc. So we sign up and take the coach ride out of town.
They have a Kids Club and I have to sit through two hours of the ‘hard sell’. Alas, I say no – and we head back on a coach with tickets in hand.
Swimming Time
We meet a lovely couple of people – so it turns into a fun ride back. Then we decide it is swim time at Caesars Palace.
There is a photo shoot going on nearby. There is also a movie star asleep behind me. My son comments on his snoring as he is asleep with his mouth open, but we leave him in privacy and shall remain nameless. He is after all just human like the rest of us.
Planet Hollywood
We have a quick shower there before racing up The Strip to Planet Hollywood. We have booked tickets to Pet Popovich and seeing a show is one of the fun things to do in Las Vegas. It turns out to be a pretty good show.
It includes a lot of circus acts as well as pet tricks. The main lead man has saved a lot of strays and trained them up for the show. It all seems pretty loving and caring.
Cirque Du Soleil
We hear a great entertainment experience in Las Vegas is Cirque Du Soleil and hope to see that whilst we are here as this is definitely one of the fun things to do in Las Vegas.
Gondola Ride
We head from there to use our outdoor gondola ride. The neon edges on the gondolas make it very pretty.
Our driver sings us some funny songs which adds to the atmosphere and for a family is one of the fun things to do in Las Vegas. This time we meet a couple of girls and share the gondola – which was nice.
Dinner can be fun
We move on inside to a lovely Italian Restaurant where we have our dinner voucher. It is actually really hot in here – I am melting! We meet some nice people at the next table. As I have hardly been out at night, this feels like a real treat. We have a great time with spaghetti – Italian dining is also one of the fun things to do in Las Vegas.
Volcano
We finish dinner and just as we do, we hear the volcano show will start in 5 minutes. It is right across the street! Talk about fun things to do in Las Vegas as it booms and lights up.
Circus Circus
Next day we had plans to go to a big church that we hear are in the suburbs of LV in the a.m. So after that, we headed to Circus Circus. It was old and run down but still worth a look and made up for it with a great lunch we had at a reasonable price at the Mexican Restaurant – so add that to your list of fun things to do in Las Vegas.
New York, New York
So we drive and park in New York, New York. We wander around there. Not much for kids – there is a kids’ arcade through which is a hit and smaller fun things to do in Las Vegas. But we have seen too many by now and so that is a good $$ saved.
Excalibur
Then we head next door to the Excalibur. It has a great Jelly Belly Statue of Liberty. I don’t suggest touching it – saw one guy lick it – gross!!!
They have a downstairs fun park. We change some $$ and get two free games. Then my son plays and wins tickets. He finds the machine open, and without prompting, he quickly goes and finds a staff member to fix it. I am impressed. “I never took any”, he tells the man. So the guy opens it up and gives him a heap. It was a great lesson in honesty paying off! Las Vegas with a seven-year-old really is fun!
Luxor
We then walk to the Luxor. It is quite impressive to wander around.
Even the foyer is well presented, and we talk about Egypt and learn a bit. Its great for educational purposes if nothing else, even though it is definitely one of the fun things to do in Las Vegas.
There are a couple of non-suitable shows here. Human preserved bodies for one. I had seen the posters so we steer clear of this area. We do enjoy this cafe area. This seat is made up of bottle tops. Others are made of number plates – excellent art!
Tram Ride
The tram is running for free today (aerial monorail). So we take it a couple of times for fun. Then we meet a guy in the carriage who lives here and fills us in on how much Las Vegas is losing each year; how the taxes work; and what else to see. Very educational indeed.
M and M Shop and Theatre
So next is the M&M shop and this is paradise in Las Vegas with a seven-year-old – you should have seen his face light up! Your kids will love it as one of the greatest fun things to do in Las Vegas. We pick this M and M cushion, as by far there are more M&M shopping bags walking around town, than anything else we see.
It is 4 floors and also has a movie theatre. We watch a 3D movie “I lost my M in Vegas”. Really it is a bit scary in a couple of parts for little kids!
We enjoy the top floor. My son has a temper tantrum as he wants to buy a load of stuff and I say “no” – One of the hard things about travel. I mean he was seriously throwing a fit! The guy tells us there is an M&M store in New York. So I promised him I can look there for a “small item”. We buy a $2.50 M&M ice-cream and go.
Madam Tussaud
Next day we head to Madam Tussaud. We do love the interactive models as one of the fun things to do in Las Vegas. There are way too many to load up here, but it is a heap of fun. You can be on TV shows, play sport, laugh with a talking Elvis etc.
I do like this shot of Obama and my son – very life-like. However, I don’t suggest the Scream section for little ones. But it is set well apart and signposted if you wish to avoid it.
Cheesecake Factory
We then head for lunch to Caesars Palace. We know the Cheesecake Factory is in here – and this is a favorite restaurant. Good food, great service, and we get to talk to a couple of lovely people.
Venetian and the curved Escalator
I love how in Vegas there are up and down curved escalators at the Venetian. And this curved one at Caesars Palace too. Cool for kids and fun things to do in Las Vegas are right here.
Flamingos
After a long and late lunch, we head to Flamingos. They have an awesome garden with pink flamingos (you can see behind us). This is free for those on a budget and fun things to do in Las Vegas can still be had with little or no money.
This will be our last night here in Vegas.
Christmas Parade
We want to see the opening Christmas parade. There are three faced walking snowflakes and flowers on stilts. It is an open-air Italian Theatre. There is ice-skating, and a color-changing Christmas Tree. It is also cold!
These actors are fabulous. Our flash would not work and they were patient for about 5 minutes.
These flower people were beautiful and so graceful. If you are planning a holiday before Christmas – I would suggest this as more free and fun things to do in Las Vegas.
This is a great time to start talking about Italian Operas with my son.
It is a magical and awe-inspiring night. Something you have to see – the camera does no justice. What an end to Vegas!
The Streets Of Vegas
As we drive out the next day town is empty.
Goodbye Las Vegas. It is the Sin-City so we have mixed feelings and have had enough. But we did try to find the good. And we were able to talk and care for a few lost souls we met along the way.
