Adventure on Efate Vanuatu starts the minute you arrive – with touring this stunning island. We were seeking out the very best experiences this South Pacific paradise has to offer, by planning our trip weeks ahead of our arrival.

With this article, we want to create a guide that will inspire every type of traveller to discover the incredible diversity of activities packed into this one island. Whether your budget is luxury or modest, here you’ll find island travel tips for you all.

We enjoyed many days of exploration on the island of Efate; from its rugged coastlines to its lush, jungle-filled interior. We found more than enough adventure to fill our itinerary and also to fill our hearts with unforgettable memories.

So here is what you need to know in order to explore the island of Efate.

An Island of Endless Adventure

Our home base was the luxurious Warwick Le Lagon Resort and Spa; a sanctuary of tropical gardens and lagoon-style pools nestled on the edge of Erakor Lagoon where an easy boat ride across the water, allowed for sunsets at the bar, or a different lunch or dinner location.

The Warwick Le Legon provided the perfect blend of comfort and island charm, serving as our launchpad for daily discoveries.

To truly conquer the island, we embraced the spirit of exploration on four wheels – and on two different sets of them. Hiring an ATV / Quad Bikes allowed us to tear down dusty jungle paths and access remote areas we’d never have seen otherwise, feeling the raw, untamed pulse of the island.

In contrast, cruising in a Mini Moke with World Car Rentals was the epitome of laid-back, open-air freedom. With the wind in our hair, we navigated the coastal roads, stopping at will to soak in the breathtaking vistas of the Pacific Ocean. To me, this was the highlight of our trip, as I thoroughly enjoyed the total freedom of exploring Vanuatu by ourselves. I loved driving the rough and rugged roads and stopping any time we wanted for unique photographs.

Nature’s Playground

Efate is a natural wonderland, and we made it our mission to experience it all. We plunged into the crystal-clear, azure waters of the Blue Lagoon, not once, but twice. This iconic spot is pure magic, with its rope swings launching daring jumpers into the refreshing, cool water from overhanging trees – an experience that brought out the inner child in all of us.

Mud Baths and Hot Springs

Further north, we soothed our muscles in the therapeutic Takara Mud Baths and Hot Springs. Slathering ourselves in warm, mineral-rich volcanic mud and then washing it off in the naturally heated springs was as hilarious as it was rejuvenating, leaving our skin incredibly soft.

Local Tour We Recommend

For an unparalleled underwater experience, we joined an excellent tour with Roawia Turtle and Snorkelling Vanuatu that took us snorkelling at three distinct and spectacular reef sites. Gliding through the crystal-clear waters, we were surrounded by a kaleidoscope of tropical fish dancing around vibrant coral formations. Our guide was fantastic. I had the option of a kayak, so I could take photos from above. We also went to the isolated beach where Survivor was filmed. That was a favourite for me, and the shells were out of this world! Note: Shells can be brought back to your country, but must be washed in warm soapy water and then refrigerated prior, to ensure no sea-life is left inside. It is preferable to leave them where you find them, but this is an option should you wish to collect some of the amazing clam shells easily found everywhere on the white sandy shores.

The absolute pinnacle was the breathtaking moment we swam alongside majestic sea turtles, watching them glide gracefully through their natural habitat. It was back for an educational chat and a beautiful tropical lunch.

After our snorkelling adventure, the thrill continued as we hopped on a banana boat for an exhilarating ride across the bay to the uninhabited Eretoka Island (Hat Island). Our guide shared the profound and respectful tradition of this sacred site – the burial place of Chief Roi Mata, which for centuries has served as the final resting place for great chiefs and warriors. Standing on the quiet shore, we felt a deep sense of reverence for the island’s significant history and cultural importance.

On land, the Mele Cascades took our breath away. Hiking up through the lush rainforest to discover this series of powerful waterfalls and deep, swimmable pools was an absolute highlight. We swam right up to the torrent of water, feeling the immense power of nature. Cooling off in the waters afterwards is a must.

We also sought out the island’s pristine shores. Eton Beach offered a pretty, secluded cove perfect for a quiet swim. But it was Celery Beach that truly stole the show with its powdery white sand and unbelievably clear, calm turquoise water, presenting a picture-perfect vision of a South Pacific paradise.

Cultural Connections and Local Treasures

No trip to Efate is complete without immersing in the local Ni-Vanuatu culture. A visit to a local village introduced us to some of the warmest, most welcoming people we have ever encountered. Their smiles were genuine, and their willingness to share a glimpse into their traditional way of life was a humbling and heartwarming experience. We both loved playing with the little kids, holding babies, giving the dogs belly rubs, and even seeing the local ladies dancing as they prepared for a wedding.

In Port Vila’s markets, we found a treasure trove of local handicrafts. This market is also fondly known as the Mama Market, as it is run entirely by Mums. We spent a happy morning browsing the stalls, eventually selecting hand-carved Tiki statues, intricate rock carvings, and beautiful wooden artifacts—authentic souvenirs that hold the spirit of Vanuatu.

We even found adventure on the water at the Rentapao River, where a series of waterfalls and, yes, more thrilling rope swings awaited. Tarzan swings into deep, fresh-water pools surrounded by jungle greenery which provided an adrenaline rush we’ll never forget.

Island Comfort and Safety

Navigating Efate felt refreshingly straightforward and incredibly safe – day or night.

The main ring road is well-maintained, making a self-drive adventure entirely feasible. The Ni-Vanuatu people are incredibly friendly and helpful, and we felt completely secure and welcomed everywhere we went. There’s a palpable sense of community and contentment on the island that puts visitors immediately at ease. We felt completely safe at night and even caught the local mini vans home after a night out on the far side of the island.

After long days of adventure, returning to the comfort of our luxurious resort was bliss. The luxury of a cold drink by the pool, a delicious meal (we selected a bonus $1000 food and beverage voucher as part of our travel booking with My Vanuatu).

As we relaxed in our suite, the sound of the waves provided the perfect end to each action-packed day. It’s the ideal balance of tranquil traditional charm and luxury style.

For those seeking a destination that offers everything from heart-pounding adventure to serene natural beauty and rich cultural encounters, Efate in Vanuatu is an undeniable paradise. Our journey around the island left us with a profound sense of wonder and a collection of memories we will cherish forever.
