Awesome Adelaide Vacation for families is an article you need to read for planning your next time away as a family. We all need to get away every now and then from the ‘ho-hum’ grind of daily living and have some family fun.
Whether it is for just a weekend, a week, or a month; time spent on a holiday makes us feel relaxed, and recharges our batteries.
Why Choose Adelaide
Adelaide is considered one of the more relaxing cities of Australia so an awesome Adelaide vacation for your family wanting a break is perfect. It is easy to get around. Small, clean and the best bit – very affordable!
This wonderful city is also known for its great sandy beaches; so when we had a small gap in our agenda, we decided to take a little vacation ourselves. It is time for ‘Happy Holidays’ for us – yay.
Awesome Adelaide Vacation For Families Wanting A Seaside Time Away Together
One of our favorite areas is definitely the seaside, and in particular, I’ve always loved Brighton and Seacliff. Uncrowded beaches, a great cafe and pub culture, and the best bit, plenty of free parking so you can stroll along the beach, or dip in the sea.
When to Visit Adelaide
Winter is an excellent time to have an affordable and awesome Adelaide vacation for your family. Would you still bother coming to a seaside location if it is off-season you might ask? Personally, I’d have to say a resounding YES!
Here are our reasons why
Places To Go
McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, and Clare Valley
Accommodation prices are much lower, and its the perfect time for a trip to any of the nearby wine growing areas of Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, or neighboring McLaren Vale.
With McLaren Vale being less than one hour from Brighton, and the cellar doors less crowded in wintertime, it is another perfect reason to head to South Australia.
Even Old Reynella is great for wine-tasting and activities too.
Things To Do
Willunga Almond Festival
Of course, late winter / early spring is pretty for the Willunga Almond Festival. Here you can wander through the stalls and enjoy this market-style festival with rides for the kids and lots of food.
Watch The Adelaide 36ers
Adelaide has an amazing basketball team called the Adelaide 36ers that are world famous. Come along and enjoy this great sport in the warmth of an indoor court. Explorason loves basketball and so watching the professionals can be most enjoyable for the whole family. Good clean and wholesome family fun.
Markets and The Fringe
There are also plenty of markets in Spring. Summer is perfect for anything beach related, and late summer and autumn is the perfect time for festivals like The Fringe too.
So whenever you decide to visit Adelaide, there will always be something that suits the weather you are experiencing.
Yes – awesome Adelaide vacation experiences can even occur in the dead of winter too!
Where to Stay in Adelaide
With a few days gap in our itinerary between housesits, we book into Seacliff and Brighton Beach Apartments.
We selected Kauri Cottage at Seacliff – a 2 bedroom place that was just ‘Home Sweet Home’ for us.
With Chesterfield sofas and a toasty warm fire, we loved the cozy feel of Kauri Cottage. It had everything we needed and more.
A fully enclosed and completely private front courtyard is at the front. French doors open onto a beautiful leafy garden decked area, with a pretty little garden.
In the warmer months, why not enjoy a lovely glass of wine from your trip to the vineyards as the sun sets in the distance?
Snug Inside In Winter
Being winter just made us feel snuggly and warm here, so we settled in and made our own dinners each evening. There is a complete modern new kitchen with stove hob, oven, microwave, refrigerator and all the cooking utensils needed.
Family Fun Cooking
Why not have the kids cook Mum or dad dinner? There is also a ‘pay it forward’ pantry with basic supplies like cooking oil, salt, and pepper etc. supplied, and guests can leave any extras they no longer need in the staple food department like cereals, spices, etc. This assists guests to add flavor and surprise to their cooking should they choose to use the well-equipped kitchen.
Explorason loved the complimentary wifi, and this great fire heater (plus there is an air conditioning/heating unit).
Curled up in my winter PJ’s, it was movie nights, popcorn, and hot chocolate with the great selection of DVD’s provided to view on the flat-screen TV.
And great family time with a selection of board games we found tucked away in the French dresser. There is also a set of bunk beds in the 2nd bedroom too, so perfect if you decide to bring the kids.
There were even a few novels, and glossy interior design and fashion magazines to add to our hours relaxing in this lovely white cottage.
Relax With A Hot Bath
For those who like a soak in a nice steamy bubble bath, there is also a separate toilet room to the main bathroom, so you can soak away for as long as you like with no-one pounding on the bathroom door.
Kauri Cottage is tastefully decorated in white throughout, with a few splashes of oceanic blue color.
The seaside feel to this cottage makes you enjoy winter even if the rain is falling outside because it is a snug time for your family to relax and bond. Perfect even for those wanting a mini-vacation but a little more than just a staycation.
Or, why not grab some fish and chips and create an indoor picnic with a lovely bottle of wine from one of the local wineries you have visited?
Sunsets
Adelaide and South Australian beaches are known to have some of the most have perfect sunsets. It is great to go an still enjoy the beach in winter. Bring your camera or your fishing rod.
Getting Around Adelaide
TRAIN
If you are staying down by the beach (Seacliff) then you will find that only 1.5km (& one train station away) is the stunning and historic Kingston House. Here Devonshire Teas are served on Sunday afternoons from March until November.
The direct train line runs to either Marino Rocks or a relaxed 25 minutes to Adelaide city – perfect for the traveler who doesn’t want the inconvenience of city parking or the stress of driving in an unfamiliar city.
Westfield Marion Shopping Centre, including the cinemas, Adelaide Aquatic Centre and Adelaide Showgrounds are all accessible along the Seaford Line.
BUS
The Brighton train station has a bus interchange to Flinders Medical Centre and Flinders University.
CAR Hire
This is the 4th time we’ve had a short break in Adelaide. Each time we have used Koala Car Rentals – a truly Aussie company (Adelaide owners).
We love their zippy compact late model cars, that are very economical on petrol.
There is a special price for week-long car hire from $20 a day too (subject to conditions, insurance options, model, etc.)
They will even drop you at the airport at no extra charge or into the city if you pre-arrange this.
Family Fun in Adelaide
Latitude
We thoroughly enjoyed our time with friends at Latitude. Their family has 3 daughters, with 2 of the girls quite close in age to Explorason, so they had a great time. Latitude is a trampoline indoor park for young and old. Big and little kids and even parents can get into the fun.
Price on weekends is approximately $20 per child and includes a pair of grip socks. Bookings are required in advance, by the hour.
Popeye
And then there is always the iconic Popeye. A slow sail down the River Torrens past the Festival Theatre, and down to the Adelaide Zoo. A great time to sit and relax. Popeye was around when I was a kid and is still going strong.
Paddle Boats
In summer there are paddle boats too on the River Torrens – loads of fun for everyone, especially if you kid paddles you right under the water fountain like mine one did – I was drenched!
Friendly folk in Adelaide
Adelaide is known for several things. It is a planned city and a square mile that is very easy to get around. This iconic location is proudly the city of churches, where many old prestigious church buildings grace the tree-lined city streets.
It is also the Festival State, with South Australia hosting many festivals, especially in the summer months.
Adelaide also is a city with many kind and friendly people. The city of Adelaide, you might find, has a broad cultural mix too. Settled by Germans, market gardens thanks to the Italians, and the Greeks proudly came in and helped to establish many of the restaurants.
Meet Other Families And Celebrate Life Together
We had a great time with a family originally from Great Britain, and with a new giant portable fire pan in their backyard, the children all enjoyed collecting pine cones, and firewood, and then roasting marshmallows. It was a fabulous night of fun for kids and adults alike.
Planning your next Adelaide vacation for families has never been easier. Don’t let the winter weather stop you. We didn’t!
We head off on our next exciting adventure soon.
