Luxembourg and Germany for a day trip

We have been staying in Belgium with friends and trying to see as much of this beautiful area as possible.

So this day we decided on a road trip to Luxembourg, with a quick side trip to Germany – well across the border a short way anyway.

It was only a 2-hour drive and we drive with a smooth drive.

We parked the car effortlessly and then headed into town to explore.

We first went to the Pont Adolphe.  The famous Luxembourg bridge was under repair, so no photos of that. There is also amazing gardens and terraces you can walk to below.

But the view was still incredible. There are old catacombs on the overside.

We then wandered around to “Gëlle Fra”. A remembrance gold statue on Place de la Constitution.

Luxembourg is small and easily walked in one hour on foot around the city center and past the cathedral.

There is a side fountain there with mosaic fish/shapes inside too.

We wandered past city squares.

We then found a guy doing a job we think must be challenging to the mind. He is the guard at Palace of the Grand Dukes (Palais Grand-Ducal).

It is a pretty beautiful building right in the center of the city and easy to find.

We then headed through the museum and down the elevator and out the rear door for a stunning view.

Here you find Le Chemin de la Corniche.  The old city.

This land balcony foes a killer view of the river below, which was lined with old homes and a nice church at the end. So we head back through Luxembourg for lunch.  Past the famous Oberweis patisserie.

Lovely florists also filled the street with hydrangeas and lavender.

We stop in the town square for lunch and then find our way back to the car park.

Next, we want to see a castle right on the border of Germany.

This is a sweet town called Vianden.

Explorafriend fell in love with this town – she decided she wanted to live here!

It was another place that felt like time stopped.

This little town exudes the charm of yesteryear. We, however, wanted to go to Germany and were running out of time.

So we decided coffee in Germany was the call of the day for afternoon tea.

So over the border, we drove – on this trip, that makes it country number 29 for Exploramum and Explorason, and country number nine for Explorafriend.

We drive on for a few k.m. and don’t find a coffee shop so we turn around after a man tells us that the town on the opposite side of the river is in Germany anyway. So we go and have coffee there. Technically I think it wasn’t but it didn’t matter as we had at least been to Germany either way.

It was delightful to sit by the river with the fountain behind us.

It was warm and sunny and oh no – nearly 5 p.m. and we hadn’t even been inside the castle!
So off we set over the bridge again.

Back past the gorgeous old homes and old buildings.

And up to the castle, we drive.

We discover we are out of time to go inside, so we start our drive back to Belgium. We have to stop for one last look at the castle and the valley below. It was a fantastic day.  We came back to a gorgeous BBQ dinner with our friends.

We are going to miss this part of Europe.

It is all too fast, but we have a house-sit to get to, so seeing a bit is way better than missing out completely.
