Snowy Christmas in Wisconsin
This year is going to be different as we have Christmas in Wisconsin. It is a festive season that comes after spending months on the road. We are glad that our family travel got us this far and is offering us an opportunity to have a unique type of Christmas. The luxury travel experts in us encourage us to be creative and never let loneliness and boredom have a toll on us. For this reason, we believe we are going to have the best single parent family travel experience in this place.
We have no immediate family or relatives to share it with as we are in our first year of traveling the world. Wausau is not hot like Australia – it is cold – freezing cold, and snowing outside.
Yeah! We have so hoped for this wintery Christmas with a blanket of snow. Christmas Eve is spent with our longtime friends, and also new friends too. It is fun as they play games while dinner is prepared.
We are visiting them on their ranch, and dinner is fantastic! They have horses and love John Wayne. They have a fabulous country home, and lovely friends who have visited Australia, so there are lots to talk about. So far Christmas in Wisconsin is living up to expectations and going beyond.
It is a late night when we finish and we head home to get ready for Santa’s visit. My son puts out home-made shortbread biscuits and eggnog. Off we all go to bed and we wait for what Christmas in Wisconsin will bring in the morning.
I am woken by a very excited boy who dashes up to see if Santa has been here. The evidence is there! Wow, that carrot has sure been eaten!
And the individual stockings (and chosen especially for each person) are full. We always start with the stocking and more onto the gifts next.
There is a very excited seven-year-old boy as he waits for the gifts to be distributed. In my stocking, I receive fake mustaches and these are a lot of fun!
I am also given Wisconsin socks and a Packers Football top. It is funny, as I have been going on for days about what a horrible green color they have. But I get a great soft long sleeve top, and I really do love it – the cut of this top is actually very slimming!
Alas, most presents I buy for my son are faulty. The DS games are region locked and don’t work. The Reece’s headphones from Hershey only work one side. The magic light up thumbs from FAO Schwartz in New York – only one lights up.
I feel so sorry for Explorason, so my friend has an idea. She fills water bottles with food coloring mix, and he goes out onto the snow to write a “welcome” message.
We head in to get ready for the Christmas dinner. My son has selected a new sweater/jumper that we purchased in Arizona on our Grand Canyon Route 66 road trip which is perfect for Christmas.
Explorason wants to look like one of the kids in an American movie – kind of a ‘Home Alone’ look I think.
Now our friend’s husband has decided to ‘live on the edge’. He is trying a deep-fried turkey. The brand is ‘Jennie’ so we name our turkey ‘Jennie’ and start making fun stories up about her. As he lowers ‘Jennie’ in the boiling oil we all stand and hold our breath.
‘Jennie’ is a huge success. This turkey is moist, not oily, or dry, or tough – really yummy (which was a pleasant surprise to all of us). He does a really good job and I think he is very pleased – I know I would be.
Update
Later back in Australia people ask us about the ‘deep-fried turkey’ experience and if I only wrote nice things because it was my friends. The answer is ‘no’ – what I wrote was genuine and the ‘Jennie’ was delicious!
Dinner is pretty marvelous and it is nice not to be alone in a hotel room somewhere. I do wonder where we will be this time next year for Christmas.
As I look outside at the snow I feel very happy. This is definitely a Christmas in Wisconsin to remember.
Thank you to all here who made it so special here in Wausau, Wisconsin.
