Ways to Make the Most of Your Vacation

Book and Plan ahead of Time

Rushing with last-minute planning and bookings can take away from having a relaxing vacation. Instead of enjoying your time and the things you love, you need to deal with fully-booked attractions, long queues or even higher costs.

Plan ahead and decide what you would like to do and compare prices before booking. Book early to score deals and early-bird discounts, particularly for vacations like group tours or river cruises to Europe, where companies tend to offer very attractive rates when bookings are made several months in advance, or even a year ahead.

Dress the Part

You’re headed off to a beautiful tropical island, a place where the air is fresh and the water is crystal clear and inviting. It’s time to kick back and embrace the island’s way of life. Pack up some cute tops, shorts, capris and a sexy bathing suit. You’ll also want to leave behind your high heels and bring casual sandals for the beach and comfortable travel shoes for nature walks and daytime outings.

And if it is a five-star hotel, you want some classy and comfortable clothing and shoes that suit days out sightseeing or shopping too.

Unplug from the World

In order to relax and unwind, the last thing you want is to receive an urgent email from your boss regarding an incomplete project. Before leaving the office it’s important to tie up any loose ends. Reach out to a co-worker in your department and fill them in on everything that needs attention. This way you can turn your laptop or cell phone off and truly relax and unwind while away. You want the kids off the internet too if you can and try and have a vacation without technology.

Secure Your Home

You might only be away for 10 days or so. However, it takes a thief only minutes to enter your home and clean you out. Protect your home and your belongings by making sure that all the doors and windows are locked including security screen doors.

You should also stop by the post office and ask them to hold your mail, complete a mail redirection or ask a family member or friend to collect it for you.

Inside the home, make sure to remove all of your trash and discard any perishables with a short life span.

Lastly, let your neighbour know when you are leaving and the date you’ll return so that they can keep an eye out for anything out of the norm, water your plans etc.

Have Everything in Order

A great tip to relax and unwind is this. Within a few weeks prior to your departure, you should have all your papers in order. You should have your airline tickets, passports, and hotel reservations confirmed.

You should also have a comprehensive packing list to avoid leaving home without things such as medications, spare contacts, and personal grooming tools.

You should also start packing your suitcases with the items you aren’t using and then complete the list a day or two before leaving.

Have your Funds Secure and Available

Even people who are world travellers often learn the hard way about having enough money set aside and available for their vacation. This is especially important if you’re going to another country where you need to change your money to theirs.

A good rule to stand by is to create an estimate for your vacation and then add 20 % to the total. This way if you see something you want to purchase or something you want to do, you’ll have the extra money on hand.

Make sure your credit cards are active and the bank is advised of overseas travel.

Lose the Guilt

People who are committed to their jobs often have difficulty leaving the office behind even while on vacation. Make every effort to refrain from feeling guilty. You have the right to some well-deserved downtime, the same as anyone else does. Just as you fill in for people while they are away, others will do the same for you.

Create an Itinerary

If you’re looking to do things like visit historic places or go scuba diving with a group, make sure to book a spot ahead of your trip. In most cases, there are a limited number of people in planned tours and group activities, and the spots fill up quickly.

  1. Thank you for these great tips on relaxing and unwinding on holiday I love the idea of a planned itinerary. I can’t wait to go on holiday after the current situation is over. It’s so hard not being able to getaway.

  2. I agree with the plan ahead of time and book despite some people advocating the whole do it spontaneously as there are last-minute deals. It’s just more peaceful mentally when I know I have things in place. Yes, I leave room for improvisation in the itinerary where one thing can lead to another but generally I like to have a basic idea of what I’m going to be doing instead of reaching the place and then waster precious time trying to plan what to do. Lovely read!

  3. Great tips! I think most people do not go into vacationing with a plan and that’s how they end up missing out on lots of events/tours you need to book months in advance. Having a basic idea of what to do with some free time is the best way to relax and unwind

  4. These tips are even more important these days post-pandemic! Thanks for sharing. 🙂 I definitely have to get back in the relax and unwind mindset for traveling this summer!
