Thousands of people housesit every year, but if you are a student, this could be the perfect way to explore the world – and here’s why.
It takes time to build up a reputation for being trustworthy and reliable, but once you have references to back up your claims of being the perfect house sitter, you should have no problem finding people willing to let you look after their home and pets while they take a vacation, travel for business, or visit family.

Low-Cost Vacation
House sitting is great for students because it’s a free vacation. Aside from the cost of travel to and from the location, all you have to pay for is the cost of food, drink, and entertainment. Depending on where you end up, you could have a swimming pool and other cool things to play with. There could be dogs to walk, horses to ride, and glorious scenery to admire. All of this would cost you a fortune if you were to book a vacation somewhere scenic, so for a cash-strapped student doing a masters in social work online, it’s ideal.
Spending a vacation house sitting means you have the freedom to treat the house like home. It’s like staying in a free holiday rental. Everything you need will be there, including technology such as a Wi-Fi connection, so you can continue with your studies.
Students studying for an online degree can stay as long as they like since they don’t need to be back in class at the start of term. This means house sitting is great if you want to travel the world whilst studying for an online Masters in social work. You can move from one property to another whilst maintaining your course schedule. Since you are free to stay wherever you want, use the opportunity to explore places you haven’t visited before.

There are several house sitter websites where homeowners and prospective house sitters can contact each other. This is the safest way to proceed, as both parties have to undertake some basic security checks before they can be active members.

Providing Character References
As a student, you probably won’t have done any house sitting before, so you will need to find someone to provide a character reference. Your M.S.W. online course tutor is a good place to start, but if you have work experience, for example via an internship, ask your employer to provide a second reference. If you have any special skills, perhaps with regard to taking care of larger animals such as horses, it is also a good idea to find a referee who can vouch for this.
