The Club Hotel Singapore – Where Old Meets New

Spending a vacation as a family in Singapore so much fun. One of the most important considerations prior to arriving is selecting the place to stay. There are so many hotels in Singapore, so where should a visitor in this grand city stay?

I have not been to Singapore for over 30 years and had no idea where to start.  So when we flew into Changi Airport on a balmy Saturday evening we were in for quite a few surprises.

Our first surprise was the traffic, and we hadn’t even left the airport yet.  Traffic jam number one turned out to be on the travelator (moving walkway) when a child’s shoelace became caught in the gap at the step-off point.  Oh boy, did it hurt as we tried like crazy to back-step with our rolling bags as we experienced a ‘pile-up’ – my toe was run over, my heel was smashed into with a case, and bodies landed on top of one another. Parents rushed to his aid. You have to laugh, or you’d cry at the vision it created!

Limping off we head out to find a taxi.  The Pokemon craze has hit Singapore with a vengeance, and we found ourselves trapped in a traffic jam for over 1 hour as we crawled past parks known as ‘Poki Stops’ (players hunting Pokemon) were jam-packed.

When we finally stop at our hotel, the road is closed for the weekend street dining, so then to our horror, our taxi is reversed into on the driver’s side as another taxi tries to reverse and turn his car around.

So it was a bit of a crash start to Singapore for us!

The Club Hotel is situated on Ann Siang Road and the busiest time is during the weekends. People become enthusiastic and come to the street to enjoy the nightlife, and dining in the street, as the streets are closed to vehicles enabling tables and chairs with alfresco dining and drinking to occur.

The Club Hotel has several restaurants and accommodates visitors serving excellent food and beverages. It’s quite common in Singapore for people to have to join the queue and wait for several minutes. People can choose freely at this establishment including the B2B basement Bar, Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell’s café style Restaurant, The Disgruntled Chef, and Tiger’s Milk – an awesome rooftop bar and restaurant which we will tell you about later in a separate article).

Now the next event is unique – The Club offers personalized check in and out – in your room – no hotel lobby! Entrance is via Mr. & Mrs. Maxwell’s café style Restaurant.

We ‘check in’ to our hotel room, and literally deposit our luggage (as it is getting late and we are famished), and head out to join the crowded streets.

I loved sitting there surrounded by the old colonial charm of Singapore watching people stroll on by.  Poor ol’ Explorason was so tired that he fell asleep halfway through dinner.

I guide Explorason back to our hotel room and he manages a ‘happy snap’ on the end of the bed, but we barely unpack before he falls asleep. It has been a long day traveling from Sydney to Singapore, and he has done really well.

The Club recently underwent a major facelift, and now tells the story of a mythical couple “Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell” who are traveling the world (a bit like us), and return from their journey to stay at The Club. So the interior design reflects the eclectic mix of decorations they have collected from their world journey. Now I can relate to that! That is exactly how I feel here – like it is ‘home away from home’.

Combining luxury and comfort and is where old meets new, it’s suitable either for families, singles, couples, or business people.

The Club

It is a boutique hotel with only 20 guest rooms including two suites.  The Club Rooms are around 28 sq.m., while the two club suites are around 41 sq.m.  So the rooms are bigger than regular hotels in Singapore (because Singapore is a city rather strapped for space with much of the land now reclaimed from the sea.)

But one of their best attributes of staying here is right beneath us as we sleep.  The comfortable Hypnos Beds in the rooms have been awarded ‘Royal Warrant’ from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.  So even Queen Elizabeth has approved of the beds here at The Club. If it fits the Queen’s preferences, it must be fit the majority of guests! Made with ‘intelligent pocket spring technology’ – this technology alleviates tension and minimizes pressure points on the body. This then assists to increase blood circulation.

Even Explorason commented on how well he slept here.

On top of all that (excuse the pun) there are down pillows, quilts / duvets / featherbeds with exquisite 400 thread count 100% cotton Sateen bed linens are used.

I loved the fact that the windows open – I am a fresh air lover, and modern high-rise buildings may not offer that.  But air conditioning, shutters, blinds, and curtains added to ‘blanket out’ light and sound.

The bathroom shows a modern and luxurious touch and is amazingly compact. And the toiletries were plentiful and just lovely with the aroma of essential oils.

Chinatown

The historical area near to where The club is located is also the mixture of the ‘East meets West’ culture. That means visitors and tourists alike can reach interesting landmarks nearby.

For instance, there’s the Sree Mariamman Temple, Chinatown, Buddha Tooth Relic Temple & Museum, the Financial district etc.

The Club Hotel is also near to 2 MRT stations.  We used the MRT all the time and found it very easy.

We spent four nights staying at The Club and using it as a base to explore Singapore, because of the great location.

And an added bonus, The Club even provides a ‘handy phone’ with free international calls to designated countries like Australia. No need to look like a lost tourist as it is great to use, instead of carrying a paper map when you can use online maps. So we carried this phone with us as we went out exploring the many facets of Singapore.
